Marisa Crawford brings a strong political and policy perspective to the Nelson Taplin Goldwater team. She leads many clients through the state regulatory process in the country’s red states.

Marisa founded her own company in 2010 with a focus on what she knows best – building and maintaining relationships in both the public and private sectors. In the seven years since starting MJC Consulting, she has worked on major policy and regulatory initiatives for Fortune 400 companies.

Before starting MJC Consulting, Marisa worked from 2004-2010 in the South Carolina Governor’s Office. During her tenure there, Marisa served as Director of Cabinet Affairs and then Legislative Affairs Director. Her experience in these roles allowed her to work directly with state agency directors, agency senior staff, and members of the General Assembly, forging lasting working relationships across state government.

In 2010 Marisa joined then-State Representative Nikki Haley’s campaign for governor as Finance Director. Marisa led her team to raise the resources needed to help Governor Haley win and become the first Indian-American female to serve in the office of Governor in U.S. history. Marisa continued on with Governor Haley to ensure a second victory in 2014. Through strong relationships, hard work, and dedication, Marisa was able to guarantee the Haley for Governor team had the funds needed to push Governor Haley to re-election with the largest margin of victory for a South Carolina chief executive since 1990.

During her more than 11 years of service to two Governors, Marisa was the primary liaison to the Republican Governors Association (RGA). It was in this role that Marisa was able to extend her relationships to reach into the State Houses of Republican Governors across the United States.

Marisa’s extensive experience in planning high-level events was key in 2006, as she served as Executive Director of the South Carolina Host Committee for the National Governors Association (NGA) Annual Conference held in Charleston, SC. Marisa led a team to successfully execute the four-day conference in under eight months (historically the event is planned over a two-year period). The conference was attended by 43 governors and more than 1,600 participants.

Marisa also served as Executive Director for the South Carolina Inaugural Committee in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015. As inaugural executive director, Marisa led all planning and fundraising efforts, culminating in seven historic, high-profile events held in a 24-hour time period.

Marisa began her career as a political fundraiser working for the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), Senator Bill Frist (TN), Governor George Voinovich (OH), Governor David Beasley (SC), and Senator Phil Gramm (TX). During her tenure at the NRSC, she organized events with headliners such as Mikhail Gorbachev, Margaret Thatcher, and former Presidents of the United States.

While taking a five-year departure from policy and politics, Marisa worked with a national marketing, advertising and public relations firm as an Account Supervisor and Director of Public Relations. She worked on such accounts as Shell Oil Company, Avanex, Nickelodeon and the Cigarette Tax for Medicaid. As Account Supervisor for Shell, she oversaw the implementation of their US Corporate Responsibility campaign. For Avanex she managed a five-city international re-branding of the company during their purchase of two competitors.

Marisa is a graduate of the College of Charleston. She lives in Charleston, SC with her daughter.
